“Veneras” paths or “peabideak” are the mountain roads that were used to transport iron ore from the mines to the foundries where it was transformed.
At first, the furnaces for the production of iron called “haizeolas” or “gentiolas” were located high up in the mountains, in the woods near the mines. However, from the twelfth century onwards, the “zeharrolas” appeared. Technical progress associated with the use of hydraulic power meant that these facilities were transferred to riverside locations. As the workshops were now located in the bottom of the valleys, the furnaces were further away from the mines and therefore it was necessary to find a way to transport the minerals that supplied them. This lead to the creation of the “veneras” paths or “peabideak“, i.e. the mountain roads that were used to transport the iron ore from the mines to the foundries where it was transformed.
Since ancient times, iron work has been a major activity in Legazpi and therefore the transport of ore has also been a very significant activity for a long time. During the Middle Ages and the Modern Period, the most productive mines were located in Mutiloa, and these were the starting points of the “veneras” paths which supplied the nearby ironworks in general and those of Legazpi.
The Olaberria Peabide
The Olaberria “veneras” paths linked the ironworks of the same name with the Peatza mines (the term in Basque means “place of mineral”). With the construction of the railway in the 1860s, the last stretch of the old path was lost and therefore we will start from the hut at Motxorro.
The Peabide of Telleriarte-Brinkola
The mineral for the Telleriarte and Brincolaforges was brought from Peatza, via Santa Marina, Biurrun and Teniola to Egiluze. In this clearing, the path split into two: one path headed towards Korta and the other towards Elorregi. Anyway, at this time we propose a single route: the one linking Korta with Petza.
